What is Bluegrass? A Newbie’s Journey to The Seldom Scene

I have a confession: I wasn’t sure if Bluegrass was for me. When I first heard about it, I thought, Isn’t that just banjos and really fast songs? But as we prepare for some amazing events here at BlackRock, including Art Enlightens on March 8, 2025, featuring The Seldom Scene, I decided to give Bluegrass a closer look.

The Seldom Scene

The truth is, I’ve only been to one Bluegrass event—a jam session I stumbled into on a whim with some friends. As someone who is heavily introverted (leaning into the ambivert side on rare occasions), I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the experience. Crowds, unfamiliar music, and an energetic atmosphere aren’t usually my thing. But what surprised me most that night was how Bluegrass pulled me in despite myself.

The lively rhythms, heartfelt harmonies, and the way the musicians fed off each other’s energy created something electric. By the end of the night, I found myself clapping along and smiling—completely swept up in it. Now, I’m excited to take a closer look at this genre with The Seldom Scene, one of the most iconic Bluegrass bands, right here at BlackRock. If you’ve ever felt hesitant about exploring something new, let me share why this might be the perfect introduction for you, too.

My First Steps Into Bluegrass

What I’ve learned is that Bluegrass is about connection—connection between the musicians, the audience, and the music itself. It’s a genre that thrives on collaboration, where instruments like the banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, and bass each take their turn in the spotlight. Every note feels alive, like it’s part of an intricate conversation happening right in front of you.

The music has roots in the Appalachian region, drawing on influences from folk traditions, blues, and even jazz. It’s a mix of playfulness and raw emotion that feels deeply human. And here’s the kicker: even for someone like me, who prefers quiet corners and smaller interactions, Bluegrass has this way of pulling you out of your shell.

At that jam session, I started the night just observing, not sure if I’d feel comfortable. But as the music built, I couldn’t help but get caught up in the rhythm. Before I knew it, I was tapping my feet and clapping along. I didn’t think that was possible, but here I am, ready to take the plunge again—this time with The Seldom Scene.

The Seldom Scene: My Gateway to Bluegrass

If you’re going to explore Bluegrass, The Seldom Scene is the perfect band to start with. They’re legends in the genre, blending traditional Bluegrass with modern influences to create something timeless yet accessible.

Formed in Bethesda in 1971, The Seldom Scene has a way of making everyone feel welcome. Whether you’re brand-new to Bluegrass (like me) or a longtime fan, their music has an energy and warmth that’s impossible to ignore. From heartfelt ballads to foot-stomping jams, they showcase everything that makes this genre special.

I can’t wait to experience their live performance at Art Enlightens, where the intimacy of the venue will let every note and harmony shine.

Getting Ready for TradFest

What makes this even more exciting is that it’s just the start. Art Enlightens is the perfect lead-in to TradFest on March 29, 2025, where we’ll celebrate an even broader range of traditional music and culture.

If Art Enlightens is my gateway into Bluegrass, TradFest will be the next chapter in exploring how music connects us all. Whether it’s the familiar sound of a fiddle or something completely unexpected, I’m excited to dive deeper into these traditions and see how they come alive in our community.

Why I Think You Should Join Me

If I’m being honest, as an introvert, events like these don’t always come naturally to me. I love working behind the scenes, but putting myself out there, especially in lively settings, can feel overwhelming. That’s why Bluegrass surprised me so much—it didn’t feel overwhelming. Instead, it felt welcoming, energizing, and joyful in a way I didn’t expect.

So, if you’re curious—or maybe a little unsure like I was—I encourage you to take the leap. Join me at Art Enlightens on March 8, 2025, for an evening of barbecue, incredible music, and the chance to experience The Seldom Scene live.

Tickets include options for dinner and the performance, and all proceeds support BlackRock’s programs that bring the arts to our community. Plus, it’s a great way to warm up for TradFest at the end of March.

And don’t worry if you’re introverted like me—Bluegrass has a magic way of pulling you in. You might start the night watching from the sidelines, but before you know it, you’ll be clapping along, tapping your feet, and maybe even joining in a hoedown. If I can do it, you can too.

I’ll be there, ready to embrace the music, and I’d love for you to join me. Let’s discover the joy of Bluegrass together.

See you there!
